In this article, we’ll explain more about restorative dental procedures in general, as well as how these two restorations work.

What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is an area of dental care focused on restoring or replacing damaged or missing teeth. The primary purpose of restorative procedures is to restore the functionality of teeth and improve overall oral health. There are some restorations that also improve aesthetics, these are known as aesthetic restorations.

General dentists, often referred to as family dentists, can perform most restorative procedures. However, this area of dentistry includes procedures from other areas of dentistry, including periodontics, endodontics, and prosthodontics. Therefore, a specialist may be required.

Who Needs Restorative Dentistry?

There are several reasons that a patient may need restorative dental procedures, including:

Benefits of Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dental procedures offer a variety of benefits for patients of all ages, including:

There are a few risks, including general discomfort and/or sensitivity following the procedure. Depending on the restoration, this should resolve on its own within a few days to a couple of weeks. In some cases, patients may have an allergic reaction to the metals used in the restoration or develop an infection due to the inexperience of the dentist or inadequate aftercare following the procedure.

Restorative Dentistry Procedures at Glow Up Dentistry

Our team of dental professionals at Glow Up Dentistry offers many restorative dental procedures. Two of our top procedures are:

Dental Implants

Most dental professionals consider dental implants to be the gold standard when it comes to tooth replacement. An implant is a small metal screw, usually made of titanium, that replaces the root of the missing tooth. Once the jawbone heals around and fuses with the implant, crown, bridge, or overdenture can be added, depending on how many teeth you are missing.

The process for getting dental implants usually takes a minimum of several months from start to finish. This is primarily due to the time it takes for osseointegration to occur. Once the process is complete, you will care for the restoration just like you would your natural teeth.

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is designed to replace one or more missing teeth in a row. This restoration requires alteration of the tooth on either side of the gap to create space for the crown to fit on them. The crowns are then bonded to the natural teeth with dental cement, which secures the bridge in place.

The process usually takes at least 2 appointments. During the first appointment, the teeth will be prepared, and impressions will be made. The impressions will be sent to the dental lab for the fabrication of the bridge. In a couple of weeks, you will return to the office to have the bridge placed. Once the bridge is in place you will care for it just like you would your normal teeth- it is not removable.

Restorative Dentistry FAQ's

The team at Glow Up Dentistry understands how important it is for you to understand your dental procedures. We are more than happy to discuss your questions and concerns. We are often asked the following about restorative dentistry:

Yes, major restorative dental procedures can be expensive due to the experience and expertise of the dentist, as well as the materials used, and the time required. Minor restorations, on the other hand, are usually fairly inexpensive.

The good news is that most dental insurance providers will cover a portion of the procedure since the primary purpose is to restore functionality and improve oral health.

The cost of restorative dentistry depends on the procedure required. Dental fillings are the least expensive, starting at around $50- but do go up based on the size and location of the cavity, as well as the material used for the filling.

Dental implants, which replace the entire structure of the missing tooth- roots and crown usually start at around $5,000 for a single-tooth implant. If you need full-mouth restoration, it could cost you $60,000+.

Dental bridges typically start at around $2,000 for a traditional bridge, containing 2 crowns and 1-2 teeth between.

The primary difference between restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry is this:

Cosmetic dentistry primarily focuses on the appearance of the teeth and is typically not covered by dental insurance.

Restorative dentistry primarily focuses on the functionality of the teeth, with a secondary benefit of improving appearance. Most of the time, dental insurance will cover a portion of restorative treatments.
